Melba's 300 W. 114th Street New York, NY 10026 212.864.7777 www.melbasrestaurant.com
When you are in the mood for some good ole comfort food surrounded by soulful sounds and people, Melba's is just the right spot.
For those of us who remember places like Wilson's and Wells for our favorite Sunday morning chicken and waffles, say hello to Melba's. Good 'ole fashion southern cooking continues its tradition at one of Harlem's newest restaurants. We're talking Sweet Potato Pancakes, Buttermilk Waffles, Smothered Fried Chicken, Steak and Eggs, Turkey Bacon Beef Sausage and Grits. And that's just a sample from the Brunch menu.
Melba's, located at the corner of Frederick Douglas Blvd. (8th Ave.) and 114th Street, is perfect for a family outting or a romantic dinner. The décor of black marble with mirrored walls reflects the natural light while an intimate setting is easily created when the antique chandeliers are dimmed for the evening.
Executive Chef Shawn Thorne, formerly of the "21 Club" and "Windows on the World" also serves up Catfish Strips, Sesame Chicken Fingers, and Grilled Jerk Shrimp to get you started. Salmon Croquettes, Braised Short Ribs, and Pecan-crusted Tilapia are among the dinner entrees with sides of Collard Greens, Country Yams, Tres Macaroni and Cheese, and Potato Salad. And yes, there are several Vegetarian options as well.
Finally, the desserts are absolutely delicious. Coconut Layer and Red Velvet Cake served warm are just the tip of the iceberg. The dining room seats approximately 40 people with 10 additional spaces at the bar. A dinner for two with drinks is about $70. All this along with excellent service and presentation make Melba's a four star (forks) restaurant.
