She has made us laugh since her days on “In Living Color” and “Living Single” and now in addition to all the giggles, fans can become a part of actress and comedian Kim Coles’ Kim-Unity where it is all about gratitude and self-love as they follow her journey led by a desire to inspire others while taking care of herself.
Cuisine Noir caught up with Coles right before the new year as well as an upcoming birthday to see how this natural diva is planning to celebrate the year in business as well as in the kitchen.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, it is all about practicing what you preach for Coles who now lives in Los Angeles. At the top of her list is balanced and here is what else she shared.
In 2013, you realized that health is wealth and teamed up with the American Heart Association for their Power of Laughter Luncheon in 2014. How are you doing with putting your health first in 2015?
“I am recovering from a knee injury (torn meniscus) and I haven’t been able to work out so I have had to focus on eating healthy nutritious food. Yoga and walking are gonna be my rehab buddies! I’m also committing myself to more rest and relaxation and creating more balance in my life.”
Tell us more about your culinary experiences growing up.
“My mother’s mac and cheese was a thing of beauty! And my job was to make the pineapple upside-down cake for all special occasions!”

What changes in terms of your diet have you had to make over the years to make sure you are living a healthier lifestyle?
“Kale, kale, kale and I’m trying to eliminate gluten. My body feels better when I do.”
Coles wouldn’t call herself a foodie but instead likes to eat clean. “There are sooooooo many things that I don’t like that I make the worst foodie ever. NO onions, garlic, spicy, peppers, gluten. No Indian or Mexican. Yes to simple clean food with uncomplicated flavors.”
In Coles’ kitchen, you are sure to find ground turkey, spinach, kale, hummus and gluten-free crackers. She says lentils are the latest kitchen staple that she can’t live without. Of course every girl has a guilty pleasure and she admits without hesitation, “I do love POTATO CHIPS!!!”
“My fav spice is Jane’s Krazy Mixed-Up Salt.” Humm, new one on our list.
Going natural in 2011, Coles also makes eating healthy an important part of maintaining her tresses noting, “Healthy hair starts from the inside out. Products make it look and feel good but you should nurture from the inside out!”
With a birthday on the 11th, Coles is preparing for a busy year that includes two shows she co-created and sold in 2014 that may appear on TV this year; both focusing on providing a more positive point of view of Black women.
“My goal is to get my knee healed. I just tried an AWESOME ‘alternative’ treatment called Prolotherapy just before Christmas and my pain is down to a 1 or 2 out of 10. I also want to achieve fitness again and drop approximately 35 pounds.”
